Science June Holiday Project

Seed Germination Experiment

Complete your experiment design & observation on the worksheet given out today.
  • You can get your own seeds & use the pot given today or any clear zip-lock bags.
  • Pupils' using the pots, you can do the experiment with a partner so that you have 2 pots (one for Set-up A & the other for Set-up B)
  • Individual observations can be done using 2 clear zip-lock bags or 2 plastic cups. (The benefit of using the zip-lock bag is so that you can observe how the roots comes out first.)
  • Do a 5 days observations. (More day can be done if there is a need to)
  • Do capture your experiment by drawing pictures or taking pictures of it everyday. 
  • If additional fullscape is used, do staple them behind the worksheet.
  • Record visible observations for each day. Do not merely say "Nothing happen". Even on the very first day, you can observe that the seed is wet. This is already an observation. 
This is due on Monday, 30 June.

Reminder: Your first spelling will be on 30 June as well.

Compo...

You are tasked to write a composition on the theme of "Bullying" using one of these titles as a guide:

  1. Standing up to a bully
  2. Helping a friend fit in
  3. From foes to friends
  4. A small incident which turned into a big one
Your story should be a 'flashback' and contain at least 5 paragraphs. You need to include your 'mountain' story plan in your submission. This task is due tomorrow, 28 May 2015.

  1. Science Files & SA1 Exam papers have been returned to you today. Bring home to revise. Empty everything into a separate file to be kept at home. Bring back the empty Green File in Term 3
  2. Term 3 Science Spelling has been given out today. Here are the dates for Term 3 Spelling. Do remember to study the meaning of the words. As usual, meaning will be read out & you will write the words.

Science Homework in NSB (due Monday, 18 May)

We have just completed Seed Germination & Seed Dispersal yesterday & today. Here's your task over the weekend.

  1. Concept Map on Seed Germination (include the various parts of the seed & its functions; a short description of how the seed becomes a young plant)
  2. Concept Map on Seed Dispersal (include the 4 ways of seed dispersal, wind, water, animals & splitting ; give more examples ; identify the structures or special features that the seed have in order to be dispersed)
  3. Your Own Design of the Helicopter Seed Dispersal (like the "Shorea")
  • Brainstorm on the type of materials you can use to make the wing-like stuctures & the seed
  • You may do some research to find out how such seeds are dispersed.
  • The "Shorea" must be able to sustain the the air by spinning on its own when dropped from a height. 
  • The Best "Shorea" is the one that takes the longest time to reach the ground when dropped from a height.

Last few items........into Science File & Revision Matters

We have gone through the following items in class yesterday & today. Science files have been returned to you today. Please file them neatly in your Science File on your own.
  1. Practice Paper Set 1 (2014 - MCQ)
  2. Practice Paper Set 2 (2013 - Section B)
  3. Study Notes for P5 Term 2 topics (containing misconceptions) - prepared by Ms Pan
Please bring back your files next Wednesday (13 May) for checking. 

Study Tips for your Science Exam
  • You MUST study. (e.g. Functions of each body system, Functions of various parts of the animal & plant cells, Function of each part of the male & female reproduction system, Listing the properties of Solid, Liquid & Gas, etc) Studying what you should know for each topics will help you answer the Recall (Knowledge) Questions.
  • Use Concept Maps to help you consolidate your understanding for each topic. (See NSB)
  • Revise Open-Ended Answering Techniques.
  1. Read and Underline key words in the question; 
  2. Link the question to the topic and concepts learnt; (Write down in the question paper)
  3. Construct the answers; (Use of correct keywords)
  4. Review the answers. (Are you answering to the question? Is it based on the observations given in the question?)
  • Look through your mistakes to understand why answers are incomplete & some answers are not acceptable. 
  • What is an experiment question? (Finding Aim, Variables, Relationship & Control & Fair Test)
  • Aim to score 50 out of 60 marks in your Booklet A (MCQ) (Especially so if you're weak in Booklet B open-ended questions.) Use elimination method when analysing the 4 given options.
